No one can agree on an exact definition of a 'Digital Immigrant'. However, generally speaking they are considered to be those who once never used technology such as computers or the Internet, but now do; whether they have been influenced or not, and to what degree they use the technology (arguably) doesn't matter as everyone is put into one of the two categories-there is no 'middle ground'.

Some academics in the field care that immigrants have been forced by our modern techno-determinist society to use technology, others want to understand the different attitudes between immigrants and 'Digital Natives'. The general attitude shared is that it is older generations that are more likely to be immigrants and the young to be natives. The idea behind this is that the young have grown up with technology around them.
